Manic Love

Rating: ♦♦♦♦♦

This is by the artist that brought us Fake Fur and takes place in the same universe. Since I’m still nursing a massive bit of love for Fake Fur, I’m extremely happy to have this book come onto my radar.

We have Maki, who enrolls in a summer prep school to prepare for his exams. He and his tutor, Haruji, start in on an affair, that, while leaves them both physically satisfied, leaves them emotionally lacking. Maki’s fallen for Haruji, who still has feelings for his old lover, Mizuguchi. Mizuguchi is a teacher at Maki’s high school and suggested to Maki that he take part in the tutoring sessions, and told him about his adventures with a younger Haruji. See, Haruji and Mizuguchi used to be lovers, and they had both convinced themselves that it was just sex with no feelings involved.

Confused yet? Don’t worry. It all makes sense when you read the book. Maki’s character appears in Fake Fur, so it’s really quite neat to see why he acts the way he does. It’s an odd story. One where you’re not quite sure which couple you want to root for.

Satomi Yamagata excels at writing stories that challenge the reader. There is no stereotypical happy ending. It’s real, pretty raw and you end up caring about the characters far more than you really should.

I hope that more work by this artist is going to be brought over. It shows far more depth than most of the stories that are getting released currently. Don’t get me wrong. I love my escapist fluff, but sometimes I want a story that I can really sink my teeth into. Satomi Yamagata definitely delivers!
