Love Pistols 5

It’s back! Oh, my sweet crack, how I have missed you! I’m going to be a very sad little fangirl when this series is over and I won’t have it to look forward to anymore. I have a rule for myself. I’m not allowed to add manga to my bookshelves until I’ve reviewed it for the site. If I didn’t have this rule, no reviews would get done because I would just sit and read manga all day.

I got a box from Amazon yesterday containing this volume. Now, before this box arrived, I had a stack of manga that I had read that I’m supposed to be reviewing for this week. Yeah, that didn’t happen. Love Pistols trumps anything else that might come in.

Anyway, in this volume we break away from the main characters to get the story of Seth and Haigashira. As is the norm for this series, we have a fairly angsty story with a happy ending. Both Seth and Haigashira are legendary. Their breeds are not even supposed to exist anymore. Haigashira is a bat and Seth is what is known as a winged lord – his true soul is a bird of prey.

Okay, that’s just fine. Now, here’s where it starts to get weird. In the grand Love Pistols tradition, Haigashira was raised to not let anyone know that he is really a bat. One of the things he did try to fit in yet still hide his difference was to let heavyweights experiment on him. Before they came up with the womb worm, they had all kinds of different creams and pills – some of which would turn male bits into female bits.

So, Haigashira is a male with girl bits. Trust me, this makes sense in the context of the story, even if it does sound completely crazy now. It gets even better, though. Seth is the prince of a Saudi Arabian tribe. He kidnaps Haigashira and brings him to Saudi Arabia to be one of his wives in his harem. Understandably, Haigashira isn’t too pleased with this turn of events. He may love Seth, but he didn’t sign up to be taken out of his homeland and impregnated!

Looking at this series, I really shouldn’t like it as much as I do. Nothing makes sense! It goes off on these wild flights of fancy. I should be getting cranky with it – not hoping and praying that the next release will come out quickly! Yet, there’s something about the insane story line, sketchy artwork and raw emotions of the characters that just make this series one of my all-time favorites.

I never got into this series when they were doing the scanlations of it. I don’t know why. I tried the first few releases and it just never grabbed me. I did have some friends who were completely enamored with it so when it got a North American release I decided to give it another try.

This series is utter and total crack. Do not try to understand it. Do not try to figure out why it’s so addicting. Just go along for the ride and thank your lucky stars that they brought this one over for all of us to enjoy.

For those of you who are not already familiar with the series, the basic premise is that there are Ape-Men, which make up 70% of the population. The other 30% are what is known as Zooman. Zooman have souls of animals. Ape-Men can not see the animal souls of Zooman, but Zooman can see the souls of other Zooman.

Still with me?

Norio is what is known as a ‘missing-link’. He’s a rare genetic mix. Usually, when two Ape-Men breed, they can only make another Ape-Man, but every once in a great while they will breed a Zooman. The resulting child is rare and is in high demand as a mate from just about every Zooman the poor thing has the misfortune of running into.

Madarame is one of the Catamount Zooman’s. His soul is a giant lepoard. He’s set his sights on having Norio breed his children. No matter what Norio might have to say about it.

Add in a side story about Madarame’s half-brother who’s got a hard time regulating his body temperature, hates men, but keeps fixating on one of his classmates and you’ve got something that is truly addictive.

How long do I have to wait for the next volume? I don’t wait very well. I want another volume and I want it now. Rush out and buy this one. I can’t explain why it’s so damn good, but it really and truly is.

It’s back. Are you still swimming from the utter-crack-like goodness that was the first volume of this series? Good. It just gets better (or worse) from here on in! When we last left our heroes, Madarame’s half brother, Yonekuni, was a total man-hater, but was fixating on one of his male classmates, Shirou. Now it seems that Shirou was in love with Yonekuni, but because of his attitude towards men, he never let his feelings be known.

Yonekuni has been going to Shirou for a few years now, screwing him through the mattress, then passing out afterwards and repressing the memory. When he finally figures out what Shirou has been letting him do to him, he’s understandably cranky. Not only is he getting himself turned inside out by a male, but a monkey.

Or is he?

We also have the story of two bear Zoomen whose family’s set up a contract so that they will breed together. Welcome to the wonderful world of male pregnancy (MPREG), ladies and gentlemen. Before you go running away in shock and horror, realize that this isn’t your mother’s MPREG, but a whole new and completely insane way of getting two males together to produce offspring. I’m not too sure that I want to think about the mechanics of this, but I’m sure it will be explained in great detail in later volumes.

I cannot believe that I’m actually enjoying a story that has MPREG. Damn you, Tarako Kotobuki and your addictive series! I’m supposed to be ranting about this instead of nodding my head and going along for the ride. I don’t know what makes this series so addictive, but it truly is. If you haven’t given this one a try yet, I would highly recommend it. Be prepared to giggle a whole hell of a lot.

I don’t even try to make sense of this series. I just enjoy it for being insane.

First off, we have a side story about two mongoose brothers and the viper who’s in love with one of them. Of course, the mongoose and the viper are natural enemies, so there’s some resistance to the two of them getting together, having lots of happy sex and making happy zoomanity babies. It’s very sweet, very fun and have I mentioned the fact that this series is utter and total crack yet?

Next, we rejoin Norio who’s going for extensive training at Kunimasa’s family home. Now, does Kunimasa want Norio for himself, or does he just want him because he’s a missing link? Lots of angst to come with this. Norio knows what he wants, but he doesn’t think he’s going to be able to get it. Lots of macho posturing on Kunimasa’s part. I think someone’s protesting a bit too much.

Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Norio’s destined to end up with Kunimasa’s brother, who seems to care for him as something more than an incubation machine.

Dear god, how many months do I have to wait for more of this sweet and delicious crack? I want to know what happens and I want to know now! Why, oh, why didn’t I nab the scanlations when this one was being released? Why did I turn my nose up at this series because of the MPREG and insane situations?! I should have been all over this like white on rice!

I’m kicking myself now. I want more. I’m going to be haunting Amazon.com until this fucker comes up for pre-order and then I can count down the weeks until it gets to my house.

I am so happy that they included a family tree in this release. I have a very hard time keeping track of who gave birth to whom and how everyone’s interconnected. You thought it was hard keeping track of blended families with just females reproducing.

Now we get to keep track of males reproducing with other males and females reproducing with females. Confused? Welcome to my world. I swear, if this story wasn’t such utter and total crack, I wouldn’t be able to deal with how freaking confusing it can be at times.

Okay, so Norio’s in training at the Kunimasa family compound. He’s still grappling with Kunimasa’s treatment, but there’s something brewing that’s keeping everyone distracted. Things come to a head when Kunimasa’s mother kidnaps him and prepares to auction him off as a stud to the highest bidder.

As you can imagine, Kunimasa’s not too pleased with this development, but Momma’s got a remedy for that. Can we all say ‘drugged to the gills’, boys and girls? See, Momma does not believe in paltry things like human emotions. She’s more the kind to let her animal instincts rule her and she figures that the best way to continue the bloodline is to find the most lucrative female for her son. Never mind that what her son wants is his little kitty-boy, missing-link.

There’s just one thing that Momma didn’t count on: there’s almost nothing that can stop a pissed off missing-link. Once Norio gets to Kunimasa, things take a swift turn off into happy-ever-after land. Kunimasa was hiding his feelings behind a veil of macho posturing. He really does care for Norio.

This series really needs the angst and the moments of unbelievable sweetness to keep the absolute insanity of the plot from bogging it down and rendering it into something that’s impossible to read. Oh, sweet crack-like series, I’m so happy to have another volume of you in my hands. I’m just cranky that I have to wait until the summer time to get another dose of this!
