FAKE 1

Rating: ♦♦♦♦

Most of us are at least familiar with FAKE. I know the FAKE OAV was my introduction to the wonderful world of BL. It was one of the first videos that we could buy legally that had boys kissing as a salient plot point. The manga was one of the first BL mangas to be brought to North America and helped to prove that there was a viable market for this kind of stuff. It’s a sweet, silly manga that I have a giant soft spot in my heart for.

In volume one, we are introduced to most of the main characters, Ryo Maclean and Dee Latyner. Two NYC cops. Ryo is new to the precinct and is assigned to Dee. Dee, being an incurable slacker, is more than pleased to have someone to shove all of his boring paperwork onto. While working on cases they get saddled with Bikky and Carol, two juvenile delinquents, who end up worming their way into Dee and Ryo’s lives.

I’ve heard people complaining about Matoh’s art style. In all honesty, I can’t see what they’re complaining about. Her characters are stylized, but you can always tell what’s going on where and the characters have very expressive faces. I guess this is a manga-ka whose art you either love or loathe at first glance.

TokyoPop did a pretty good job with this. While we don’t have the dust cover and the full color insert, they stayed away from filling the inside cover with pointless crap. They kept in the side story of “Bikky vs. The Bear,” which sets up the budding relationship between Bikky and Carol. I’m not the kind of person who bitches about a little het romance in her BL manga. If it’s a cute story, I’m all for it.

It’s not graphic, there are only three kisses in this volume of the manga, but it’s cute and leaves me with a smile. I really can’t ask for much more.
