Dog Style 3

I have been waiting for this one! I had forgotten just how gorgeous Modoru Motoni’s artwork is. Her boys seem so real–awkward and over-emotional. Their feelings are screaming at them to do one thing, yet they’re pushing away to protect themselves.

I really surprises me how much I like this series when I hated her other release, Poison Cherry Drive with the burning fire of a thousand suns. I guess it just goes to show you what you can do with a coherent plot line.

Now that Teru and Miki have settled into a strange sort of routine, of course, things have to come in to pull them apart. This wouldn’t be BL with out a boatload of problems keeping our heroes from committing to each other, right? Posturing, violence and remnants from their pasts keep our heroes in a state of flux until they start to smarten up and realize what’s really important.

It’s hard to pair violence and a bittersweet romance together, and have it work, but that’s what this series has done. I’m going to miss this series. I’m hoping that there’s going to be more from Modoru Motoni, but only if it’s of the caliber of Dog Style. Life’s too short to waste my time on crappy manga.

I shouldn’t like this series as much as I do. It can be confusing at times, but add in gorgeously drawn sex scenes, characters that almost feel true to life, a dollop of violence and I am one happy girl.

So, Teru and Miki have sex that is good enough to scramble both of their brains, but they still can’t admit their feelings for each other. This leaves us with the boys turning to each other for comfort when they have no idea why they find comfort in each other’s company. After all, they’re just a ‘stray dog’ and its master, right? Add in secrets from Miki’s past, Teru trying to make sense of everything, and you’ve got a steaming pile of hormones just waiting to implode.

Then, there’s the fact that I am far too fond of this artist’s style. Her characters are always amazingly expressive and her clean lines are perfect for capturing the beauty of her characters. She even manages to capture the slumped, half-finished quality of high school boys that I adore. Asami Tojo was one of the only other artists that’s been able to nail that slumpy look down.

Even with a release that I downright loathed, Poison Cherry Drive, I still liked the art. It was just that the story was nigh to incomprehensible. I’m not sure which was released first in Japan, Poison Cherry Drive or Dog Style. I’m hoping that it was Dog Style because it just shows you that even if one of your early releases sucks, you have no place to go but up.

I hate to say it, but I’ve been burned so many times with Kitty Media’s BL releases that I tend to approach them with some trepidation. I’m very happy to say that I was proved wrong with this release. This one is damn good! The art is great, the sex is hot and it has some genuinely funny moments!

The art was the part that really sucked me in. The story was a little slow going at first, but the facial expressions of the characters and the fact that this artist has mastered the whole mostly finished, slumpy, high school boy thing made me keep reading.

The plot is fairly simple. Miki saved Teru from getting his ass beat by some of the local delinquents. They’re both attracted to other people, but they seem to be able to tolerate each other. Gradually, toleration grows into something more and the boys are taking the chance to hump like rabid monkeys. Miki refers to Teru as a ‘stray dog,’ but what if Teru wants to be seen as something more than a stray?

I don’t know why I like these two so much. I guess I have a fondness for foul-mouthed, pretty boys with bad attitudes. This release is definitely worth another look. It’s so much fun.
