Almost Crying

Rating: ♦♦♦

When I first saw the character designs for this manga, I thought I was going to hate it. I don’t like my boy characters drawn like little boys. I don’t like them big-eyed and girly. I like the boys in my manga to be men. Not just a girl with a penis. So I was really surprised to find myself grinning at the sheer cuteness contained within the manga.

Don’t get me wrong, the fact that the characters looked all of nine years old made me cranky, but then they would do something cute and I would forget about being cranky for a few moments.

All of the stories are sweet, but Mako Takahashi’s take on the fairytale of the little mermaid just made the book for me. What if there was a horny prince who had read the story of the little mermaid and always got sad when he read about her turning into sea foam? What if he was in love with the little mermaid’s brother? What if he was devious enough to figure out a way to get the mermaid’s brother into bed without him turning into sea foam? A horny, deviant prince. What more could I ask for?

DMP, as per usual, did a lovely job with the presentation. I just wish they left in the honorifics. I’m sounding like a broken record here, but I really love it when the publishing companies leave them in. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you learn so much about the dynamics between the characters when you read what honorifics they use with each other. We just don’t have anything equitable in the English language. Meh. I guess when the only real complaint I have is that they left out the honorifics it’s a good thing.

Almost Crying will not be making my list of my all-time favorites any time soon, but it’s a decent manga. I’m never going to be a fan of the art style, but the stories won me over. If you’re a fan of the very cutsified boys, then you will probably find a lot to love in this manga.
