I love the way Camilla Bruce writes. It’s warm, consuming, you find yourself getting lost in the prose and ignoring everything around you.

Here, we have the story of Vilder the Hunter, who is billed as “hero, nobleman and protector of the weak.” When we first meet Vilder, he’s visiting a childhood friend, whose marriage had separated them. Vilder wants to continue the relationship that they had before his friend’s marriage, but things are not to be. Vilder feels constrained in the houses of the nobility and begins to realize that this is not the place for him. He leaves his old life behind to try and find peace.

Time goes by, and Vilder’s fame has grown as a hunter. The people know of his wishes for solitude, but see him as a rescuer. This time, they need him to rescue them from demons. It seems that a flock of demons has been terrorizing the village. The villagers place the blame solely on a young shepherd, who they claim brought the demons down from the mountain with him. The villagers turn ugly with their fear and turn on the young shepherd. Vilder rescues him from the mob and they set off to go and get to the bottom of this.

It turns out that the boy wasn’t quite as innocent as he had seemed. He was the reason for the demons’ presence in the village, but it wasn’t because of anything malicious on his part. He had fallen in love with one of the demons.

Vilder and the boy search out the demon’s lair to return the boy to his lover. Vilder is fascinated and horrified at the same time at the thought of the human boy coupling with the demon. He’s even unsettled by the demon who places his sights on him.

In the end, he’s faced with a hard decision to make. Is he brave enough to follow in the footsteps of the young human he helped to rescue or will he retreat into his solitude?

Every time I read one of Camilla Bruce’s stories, I’m always left wanting more. I don’t want to leave the fantasy world that she creates. Top that off with Livy’s lush art and I am one very happy girl. This is quality storytelling at its best. Anything that these two do goes right up to the top of my ‘must buy’ list.
