Incubus 1

Rating: ♦♦♦♦

I didn’t have high expectations for Incubus when I ordered it. I’ve been pretty disappointed in the quality of the BL manga being published in North America so far. I’m happy to say that I have regained my hope that we can put out some quality work that’s on par with what’s coming out of Japan. While it isn’t quite as crack-like as some of my favorite series, it definitely does have its moments.

We’ve got a half-demon named Lenniel and a shy, art student named Judas with a serious case of low self-esteem. Lenniel and Judas were together in a past life. Lenniel remembers it, Judas doesn’t. So what’s a horny half-demon to do? Why hop into Judas’ dreams and try to convince him that, yes, he does want this and that, yes, he wants this with him.

Lots of opportunity for angst here. Nice dialogue, written with tongue very firmly in cheek. The art style reminds me a bit of some of Kazuma Kodaka’s early work. These are boys with muscles. No bishies with long flowing hair to be found here.

The layout is clean, the presentation is nice. All in all, I really couldn’t ask for much more out of a smutty manga. I’m thrilled to finally find a North American release that I can endorse with my whole heart.
