Alone in My King’s Harem

Rating: ♦

It’s been said that the characters in BL manga are really just flat-chested women with penises. Never have I seen this cliche more apparent than in this manga. I mean it’s pretty enough, and it’s well drawn, but the characters – especially the uke characters – are nothing more than girls. Girls who cry when they have sex. Girls who cry when they think that they’ve lost the affections of their lover. Girls who cry when they have the affections of their lover. It really gets to be quite silly. Top it all off with the characters being drawn very young looking and you’ve got something that just leaves me feeling a bit empty and a bit creeped out.

This is an collection of one-shot works, rather than a cohesive manga. With the exceptions of the first and the last two stories I found myself skimming through the stories just to see how silly they would get. But I just couldn’t get past the fact that the characters looked all of twelve-years-old and they wore more makeup than some J-rockers I could mention.

While it does not inspire the loathing that Level C instills in me, I really wouldn’t recommend this manga. It’s just silly fluff.

My Only King

Rating: ♦♦

I don’t know who got the bright idea to tag Lily Hoshino as ‘the queen of yaoi’, but they must have out of their freaking minds. Lily Hoshino does not draw yaoi. Lily Hoshino draws het. All of her uke characters are girls who supposedly have a penis. They look like girls, they act like girls and half the time they dress like girls. I’m all for androgynous pretty boys in my manga, but this is taking it a bit too far.

The title story in this collection revolves around Meutrogien “call me Mewt” who is on the search for the king of his land. Somehow the seal that signifies the king got misplaced and got put on some poor human. Enter Kazuomi. Not only does he have to deal with this odd seal appearing on his body, but he’s got to deal with Mewt not letting him out of his sight. Thankfully, Kazuomi’s sister has an idea to make Mewt blend in. They’re going to dress him up in some of sister-dear’s clothes and pass him off as a girl.

Gee. Any wonder why no one questions this?

The rest of the stories in the book aren’t quite as bad as this one. I actually enjoyed the last story in the book, “The King and Rune”, where the characters were girly, but not so obnoxiously girly that they made me questioning what genre I was reading.

Much love for DMP and their production values in this book. I was impressed that they didn’t only include one full color insert, but they gave us the first four pages in full color glory. I really can’t complain about DMP’s production values.

I’m not questioning Lily Hoshino’s talent as an artist. Her books are really beautiful, I just can’t stand her style. I’m sure there’s some people out there who love it, but give me my boys who look like boys any day. If I want to read het romance, I’ll go out and get some shojo.
