You know, I didn’t think it was possible, but I found a series that’s just about as slashy as Gundam Wing. On the back cover the publishers compare Aegis to Lord of the Flies; but really, the parallels to Gundam Wing are thick and fast and furious.
We’ve got orphans, trained from a young age to kill, by some shady paramilitary organization. We’ve got space ships and intergalactic travel. We’ve got military space boys trying to blend into a normal high school. And we’ve got a true-blue friendship that was tested and stretched and finally broken.
Yes, two boys who were best friends and stuck with each other through the degradation of the military camp where the inhabitants were set upon each other like dogs. One moment of uncertainty and the friendship is over. Then years later, they don’t remember each other, but they keep looking for something or someone.
Yeah, I think the slash fangirls would have a field day with this one.
The art is lovely, with the exception of some of the super-deformed faces that the characters make. It seems to be something that’s a common theme with manwah, when the characters are beautiful, they’re really beautiful and when they’re ugly, they’re really ugly!
The writing is engaging, the story is intriguing and I want someone to write fics about the two leads angsting and beating off to thoughts/memories/ideas of each other.
What more could I ask for in a series?
