Women in a M/M’s World

May 21st, 2008 The Babes

There was an interesting post this morning on the historical queer romance blog, The Macaronis covering the role of women in a m/m world.

The most significant thing I’ve found about writing women in a m/m universe is that it just takes a little more time and attention. I think any woman can identify with that–any woman who’s ever tried to get a degree in a “man’s” field, land a job in an occupation that is generally considered a man’s domain–in fact, to accomplish anything and be taken seriously in a world, past or present, where men are expected to look for action and adventure and the ladies are expected to be the trophy for the alpha male. Writing complete, believable women in gay romance is more or less dancing like Ginger Rogers, who did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards - and in high heels. It may not be easy, but it’s definitely worth the effort. –Lee Rowan

We found this very interesting, as one of our main complaints with reading a lot of slash fiction is that female characters are put into some very narrow categories. They’re either:
- an utter bitch, who is getting in the way of the one, true pairing
- someone who is there just for comic relief or as someone who will move the plot along between sex scenes
- they’ve downgraded until they’re practically useless.

This makes us understandably cranky, as we like females. They’re usually an integral part of the story that we’re slashing.

Also, talk of fiction versus real life pops up again in fandom. A long time ago, author Tina Anderson addressed the divide in yaoi fans over Shotakon manga, a divide made greater by the introduction of 3D rendering of ’shotokon’ arts, into the fandom. This time, the discussion of fans unable to separate real life from fiction, pops up again, centering on original and fan erotic fiction. In response to poster Redsambuca’s stating that a writer/readers kinks reveal what they’re capable of in real life, a rebuttal is posted at the journal of Heidi Kaufmann (Metafandom).

So, what do you all think?

Fiction

May 20th, 2008 The Babes

We know a lot of you have grown up with us at BND. We appreciate all of you sticking with us through wrong links, misspellings and general WTF moments! Anyway, since we all have matured, the site has as well.

We bet you’re getting scared, huh? No, we’re not closing the site. We still love our happy slash fun!

We’ve been approached by authors over the years to host original fiction. We’ve always turned them down. BND is a slash site! We don’t do original fics! Where is your GW smut, damn it?! However, we want to include Boys Love in all written forms.

So, we here at BND are now welcoming original fiction to our archive! Send in your original erotica today!
